What I Love/Miss

Since arriving here, there has been so much change in my life. So much that is new and different. It’s no wonder I keep a running list in my mind of things that never cease to amaze or delight me. And those things I miss. I’m sure I’m not the only one who does this.

What I Love: free gift-wrapping in stores. Not just holiday gift wrapping, but year round. And not just department stores and fancy boutiques. Regular, everyday stores and shops. When you take your purchase to the register, in many places you are asked if it is a gift. And if they don’t ask, you can tell them and in all likelihood they are prepared to wrap it. Nothing fancy. Usually no ribbons or bows (although a favorite store selling jewelry, scarves and handbags puts multiple curly ribbons on each package). Utilitarian. No ‘competition’ to see who’s gift is wrapped more elegantly. Just a simple understanding that the wrapping is just that – the outer layer to conceal the inner gift. I. Love. This.

What I Miss: Salad dressings. I mentioned this in an earlier post. Specifically buttermilk ranch dressing. I simply cannot find it. Which makes me want it more. But I want to go broader and say that I miss the wider array of salad dressings available in the US. Yes I know how to make my own salad dressings, and do so often. But I miss Paul Newman’s entire range – the flavors, the choices. No way to get around it. I. Miss. This.
