Winkel, Winkel Little Star

I’m warning you upfront that this post is going to be a little juvenile.

Okay, maybe a LOT.

Every language has a few words that just seem, well, odd.

Or silly.

So funny-sounding that it’s hard to take them seriously.

When you have to actually use such words, it’s hard to keep a straight face. So it’s certainly not unique to Nederlands.

For me, that word, above all other Dutch words, is winkel.

It’s pronounced ‘vinkle’, rhymes with ‘wrinkle’ and means ‘a shop or small store’. Winkels are shops.

Every city, town, village has its own ‘winkelstraat‘. Street of shops. Some even name that street Winkelstraat.

The shops can be quaint, old, cozy, modern, tiny, lovely. It doesn’t matter.

I still find it extremely hard to say the word winkel without bursting out laughing.

Is there a word like that for you? What is it, and in which language? Please share, I’d love to hear.
