Oddities: Trick Out My Ride

The Dutch sure do love their bicycles, yes they do!

And I think it definitely falls into the ‘Oddities’ category.

Now it’s not odd that they truly enjoy riding their bicycles everywhere.

Bikes are a great way to get around: (relatively) low-cost, minimal maintenance, self-powered so you’re not dependent on fuel, healthy.

So it’s not surprising that this is the typical scene on a game or practice day at just about any voetbal club in the country…

But more than anything, riding a bike is fun.

Remember how great it was to ride your bike when you were younger?

As a child I LOVED feeling the sunshine on my face and the wind in my hair as I peddled furiously to catch up with my best friend. Off we’d go on adventures near and far.

It felt like freedom. Because it WAS freedom.

I have to tell you it’s even more fun as an adult.

Getting on a bike after you haven’t ridden in years is exhilarating.

Once you learn how to ride, you never forget.

Jump on a bike and it all comes back to you. Like, well, like riding a bike.

It certainly isn’t odd that they consider cycling a major form of transportation here in Nederland. So much so that they have dedicated the planning effort and space to construct beaucoup miles of fiets paden (bike paths) throughout the entire country.

I ‘ve written in the past about the odd aspects of the Dutch preoccupation with their bycicles, here and then here, among other posts.

So why do I slap the label ‘odd’ on this liefde relatie met fietsen (love affair with bicycles)?

Here’s just a taste…

Huh. Practical AND fun. I think the Dutch are definitely on to something…
