Oddities: Surprising Cityslickers

Last weekend Husband and I were visiting a friend in nearby Scheveningen.

Scheveningen sits on the North Sea, and is known for its pier and expansive public beach, bustling with activity throughout the year.

We were only a few blocks away from the beach, at one of those enormous city blocks. You know the kind, ringed with three-story brick townhouses on two sides and taller apartment buildings on the other two.

To reach our destination we entered through an alley which led to a small parking lot, and in turn, a maze of small garden plots and walking paths. We were headed to a small mews house tucked behind it all, close to the very center of the city block.

As we turned a corner, we came upon what I can only describe as a corral. Right smack in the middle of that high density ‘condo canyon’.

Husband and I exchanged looks, our eyes wide in incredulous wonder.

There, in the dirt-hardened corral, were two goats.

With two miniature ponies.

And by the fence?

A young donkey.

Which commenced braying, as if on cue.

You couldn’t script the scene better if you’d been filming a movie.

I turned to the woman with us, struggling for the Dutch equivalent of the first word that came to mind: strange.

She laughed and offered ‘vreemd‘.

Yes. Vreemd. Very vreemd indeed.
