Derek’s Top Five

On Twitter I love following Derek Haines.

I don’t quite know how to describe Derek.

He’s an author, and has written books in a variety of genre (fiction, historical fiction, Young Adult, essays, poetry).

I must confess that I haven’t read his works, but from what I gather, many would describe his offbeat style as in the vein of Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).

But he’s more than that. This Swiss-born author has developed a neat Twitter following because he’s so, well, I don’t know.

Funny, but not in a deliberate way.

Reflective, but not in a cloying way.

Quirky, but not in a contrived way.

He’s famous, but I’m not exactly sure why, or for what.

He’s definitely not searching for fame. It just seems to have found him.

He doesn’t try too hard. Sometimes it seems he doesn’t try at all.

He loves red wine, and he’ll tell you random, off-the-wall facts about his life. He’s a musician, although I’ve never listened to any of his music.

The title of the free e-book he offers to his blog followers? ‘An Uneducated View of Sex, Food and Politics’.

Anyway, I wanted to share with you a piece he’d written earlier and recently retweeted entitled Five Great Reasons to Become a Writer.

It cracks me up. Accurate yet amusing. Hard to beat.

I can’t really pinpoint exactly why I follow him. Then again, the other 20,000+ Twitter followers probably can’t explain it either.

I just know that I do. And it seems to make sense.
