A Teen’s Bucket List – Update 1

I wanted to share that there’s been some good news on the Alice front. (The original story ‘A Teen’s Bucket List’ is here.)

The social media response has been amazing. The story has literally gone viral, and the family reports that they’ve been overwhelmed with emails, etc. I received an email response from a family friend on behalf of the family, saying the same thing.

Now Prime Minister David Cameron has joined in http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-13702876. This is good news, and will help raise awareness even more.

And it’s definitely going global, as The Huffington Post has this video today. Since The Huff Post is now affiliated with AOL, you can just imagine the worldwide coverage it’s getting.

Obviously the attention is centered on Alice, as well it should be. She’s the brave one who made her Bucket List and stepped up to put a face on the need for marrow donors.

What is every bit as important is that she is focusing on her primary request: getting everyone registered on the National Marrow Donor Registry network. Hopefully this will result in finding a match for her, but also holds out hope for many, many others in a similar situation.

I’ve personally set myself two goals this summer:

1. Figure out how to actually register as a potential donor (not just joining the website, although that’s a good way to start) here in Nederland and do it; and

2. Figure out whether I’m registered as an organ donor here as well. In the US it was very easy to do; you just check a box when you receive or renew your driver’s license. I now have a Dutch driver’s license. If I’m not registered here, then I need to do that.

What about you? What might you do to support the Alices of the world??

Do tell: I’d love to hear.
