We’ve been having a pretty cool cold spring this year. The sun hasn’t really wanted to shine more than a day or so, here and there. The mercury hasn’t crept much above 50 degrees Fahrenheit more than a time or two over the past two months.
We’ve had days where it poured cold rain for hours on end, and others where the overcast sky seemed to be introducing its own version of Fifty Shades of Grey.
In layman’s terms, we’re starting to think we’re Ground Zero for global warming. I mean, is it really too much to ask that the temperature get close to the 60s by the time the calendar reads June 1st?
Clearly it is, but today has been an improvement. The sun has been shining, not a drop of rain, and the temperature has hovered near 60 degrees.
That, my friends, rates as a win-win-win this spring. Not wishing to fritter away such a lovely day, we jumped on our bicycles and headed to the beach to ride among the dunes.
We flipped a euro and decided to head south toward Kijkduin. It’s one of my favorite rides, immortalized in Sun, Sea, Sand, Voluptuous Curves and Dangly Bits.
The best part? We managed to enjoy a walk on the beach without accidentally stumbling upon one of the nude beaches.
At least I don’t think so, since it’s not really warm enough to be stripping down to one’s dangly bits…
Linda, how I envy you! Here in NYC, we’ve been suffering 90 degree weather for the past several days.
This past Thursday, a young woman got in the elevator with me in my apt building and sighed.
I said, “It’s Thursday, remember. Just one more day!”
Without missing a beat, she fixed her eyes on mine and responded: “Haven’t you heard that June is the new August?”
As the calendar changed to June, and the heat wave persisted, I’ve thought quite a lot about her pronouncement, hoping she would be proved wrong.
Tonight we are supposed to have thunderstorms, the prelude to cooler, more seasonable temps.
If the storm doesn’t come soon, I may go out and do a rain dance — but with clothes on, of course! This being a fashion capital… 🙂
I was reminded of the vagaries of weather, ML, as I watched news last night of severe flooding in Central Europe and tornadoes in the US Midwest. Funny how a few hot days strung together is welcomed as summer, but too hot or too many and feelings change. Being familiar with East Coast heat waves, I feel for you – especially in NYC. In the meantime, I’ll take our overcast, cool morning
Well, my rant to you about the weather appears to have done the trick. Thunderstorms arrived last night, and I’m looking out on sheets of rain even as I type this, contemplating what to wear for work. But hey, I’ll take it, compared to the unhealthy (literally) conditions of the past few days. That’s one way that my time as an expat in the UK changed me: I can’t tolerate that lethal combo of heat and humidity any more, and don’t mind the rain! 🙂
Well done, just remember to use your powers for good
Glad you finally had some sunshine and warm weather. I must say, I’ll take stinking hot over freezing cold any day (which is why we left Canada)! We are visiting ‘the Great White North’ right now and it’s been cold and everyone is wondering where spring is.
I hope your warming trend continues 🙂
Cheers,
Anne
We’ve strung together a couple sunny days, still windy and cool but it’s not raining. I’ll take it!
I absolutely sympathise; in Kent (England) we’ve only just found some real Spring weather this week. I suppose the greatest blessing is that we appreciate that much more! Enjoy…
That we do, Laura. The sun’s shining for the second day and hopes of more in store. Who cares if it isn’t as warm as we’d like? It’s not raining, the flowers and trees are in bloom and somewhere out there summer beckons.
Come on sun, keep burning brightly! I hope you get the summer you deserve, Linda. It’s been a mucky couple of months over there and some Vitamin D would be nice. It’s winter here but then it’s never really winter. Just summer turned down a few degrees – some snow would be nice 😉
I love four distinct seasons, Russ, I’ll take winter and snow if I get the others. So far, it’s been rather mediocre. Where is my spring? Where is my summer?
